What is LASIK?
LASIK, or Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, is a revolutionary bladeless laser vision correction surgery designed to correct various refractive errors that affect vision. These refractive errors include nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. This procedure is highly effective in improving vision by reshaping the cornea’s curvature, thereby eliminating or reducing the need for vision aids like glasses and contact lenses.
Who is a Candidate for LASIK?
If you’re at least 18 years old and have been dealing with nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, LASIK could be a suitable option for you. LASIK is an ideal choice for those who are ready to free themselves from the constant reliance on glasses and contact lenses.
Your LASIK Consultation
Your journey to improved vision starts with a LASIK consultation at Michigan Vision. During this crucial initial step, you should refrain from wearing soft contact lenses for at least 3 days before the examination and hard or toric contacts for a minimum of 2 weeks before the evaluation. Our experienced eye doctors will conduct a comprehensive examination, using state-of-the-art imaging and diagnostic equipment to assess the health and strength of your corneas. Throughout the consultation, we will take the time to address any questions or concerns you may have about the LASIK procedure and the recovery process.
Your LASIK Procedure
The LASIK procedure itself is relatively quick, typically requiring no heavy sedation. On the day of your surgery, you will receive a mild sedative and numbing eye drops to ensure that you experience no pain during the procedure. The actual LASIK surgery is performed in approximately 15 minutes for both eyes, and you should plan to have a friend or family member drive you home following the procedure.
LASIK Recovery
One of the outstanding advantages of LASIK is its rapid recovery time. Although your vision may be blurry for the first few hours after surgery, a nap can help improve this. The following morning, we will check your healing progress and assess your vision. Most individuals find themselves able to return to work and resume normal activities shortly after this examination.
